History of Air Serbia
In June 1927, the Aeroput Air Transportation Company was established. The national air carrier of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes and later of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, Aeroput was one of the first civilian airlines in the world.
With the outbreak of World War II, Aeroput’s operations ceased: pilots and planes were mobilized into military aviation, and during the bombing of Belgrade, Aeroput’s fleet was severely damaged. In 1942, the occupation authorities prohibit the airline’s activities.
1947: the Aeroput tradition is continued by Yugoslav Aerotransport (JAT). In April, planes took to the air on the first post-war lines of the newly established company. JAT’s fleet initially consisted of two C-47 planes converted to DC-3s and two JU-52s.
In November 1974, the JAT B-707 plane embarks on a round-the-world trip from Belgrade-Beirut-Bombay-Singapore-Tokyo-Honolulu-Los Angeles-London-Belgrade.
In the early 1990s, the most difficult period since World War II began in the history of the former Yugoslavia. It led to war, the collapse of the country and sanctions that hit the national airline first and hardest.
In May 1992, JAT flies to New York for the last time; two days later, the U.S. imposes an air embargo on Yugoslavia. Immediately afterward, the UN imposes economic sanctions.
After 56 years of operation, Yugoslav Aerotransport is transformed into Jat Airways.
August 1, 2013 UAE national carrier Etihad Airways, Jat Airways and the Government of the Republic of Serbia announce a strategic partnership. Etihad Airways buys 49% stake in Jat Airways, Jat Airways becomes Air Serbia. Etihad and the Government of the Republic of Serbia have committed to invest US$40 million each, and to provide additional funds up to a maximum of US$60 million. The airline operated its first flight to Abu Dhabi in October.
In 2020, under an agreement between the Ministry of Economy of the Government of the Republic of Serbia and Air Serbia, the Serbian national airline was recapitalized. In doing so, the Republic of Serbia increased its ownership in Air Serbia from 51 percent to 82 percent, while Etihad Airways’ share was reduced from 49 percent to 18 percent.
